What is Humalog KwikPen?
The Humalog KwikPen is a type of insulin delivery device (insulin pen) for the use of Humalog Insulin Lispro. The KwikPen is a pre-filled, disposable insulin pen designed to make it easier for you to administer your doses of insulin. The pen is a convenient method that allows you to subcutaneously (under the skin) inject your dose without having to use a vial, needle and syringe. The KwikPen is used to help conveniently administer your Insulin Lispro dose without the uncertainty involved with proper injection technique, and the additional involvement of vials, needles, syringes, etc.How does it work?
The Humalog KwikPen is pre-filled with Humalog Insulin Lispro, which is a man-made insulin analog that works similar to naturally occurring insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is produced by beta cells in the pancreas, which is a large organ near your stomach. Insulin is primarily involved with the regulation of blood sugar levels by controlling the break down of food (sugars, fats and proteins) and promoting the absorption of sugar from your blood into your fat, liver and skeletal muscle cells. The KwikPen has a compact size and simple design that allows you to manage your blood sugar levels at home or on the go with accurate, straightforward and convenient Insulin Lispro delivery.Side effects
Common negative effects may include:
- Hypoglycemia
- Injection site reaction
Less common negative effects may include:
- Diabetic Acidosis
- Lipoatrophy
- Hypokalemia
Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:
- fast heartbeat,
- excessive hunger,
- headache,
- nausea,
- dizziness,
- confusion,
- weakness,
- blurred vision,
- tremor,
- drowsiness,
- sweating,
- trouble concentrating,
- seizure (convulsions).
How to take this medication
Humalog Insulin Lispro has a quick onset of activity that requires that you take it within 15 minutes before the start of a meal, or within 20 minutes after the start of the meal. The Humalog KwikPen is a disposable pre-filled pen that contains 3 mL of Insulin Lispro. The KwikPen dials 1 unit at a time and you can give yourself multiple doses with one pen. You can give yourself 1 to 60 units in one injection. Dial your usual dose as instructed by your doctor. Refer to your KwikPen “instructions for use” for proper instructions and always carefully follow your doctor’s directions.Dosage
Your dose of Humalog Insulin Lispro was determined by your doctor in order to give you the blood sugar level control you specifically need. Your dose and dose schedule should be adjusted in order to maintain your blood sugar at the healthiest level possible. You should subcutaneously (under the skin) inject your dose within 15 minutes before the start of your meal or immediately after the meal (within 20 minutes of starting your meal). Suitable injection sites are; the tissue of the upper arm, abdomen, buttocks or thigh. Your usual dose and schedule might be affected by changes in your food intake, level of activity, or work schedule. Always carefully follow your doctor’s instructions to allow for these types of changes. Other things that may affect your dose and dose schedule are illness, taking other medications, pregnancy, exercise and travel.Warnings and Precautions
Do not share your Humalog KwikPen with anyone else, even if the needle has been changed. Do not transfer the insulin from your KwikPen to a syringe. Syringes will not measure the units/mL of insulin correctly. A severe overdose may result, causing very low blood sugar levels which may put your life at risk. The KwikPen is not recommended for use if you are blind or visually impaired without the help of someone trained to use the Pen.Before you use your KwikPen talk to your doctor or pharmacist if:
- You have or have had trouble with your kidneys or liver
- You begin to exercise more than usual
- You want to change your usual diet
- You drink alcohol
- You are traveling across more than 2 time zones
- You are sick
- You are pregnant, or are planning on becoming pregnant
- You use other medicines, or supplements
